Ethics Shmethics

Been having a lot of arguments the last couple of days revolving around the ethics surrounding hunting. I myself believe that once the necessity is removed from killing animals, and only the sport remains, then hunting is wrong. And so begins this Friday's five:

1) Sport Hunting, Right or Wrong?

2) If you had to kill your own food to live, would you do it? Or become a vegetarian?

3) Russian Roulette is also considered by some to be a sport. Should the "winners" be prosecuted by law for participating?

4) Would you attend a public execution? What if it was televised, would you watch?

5) Would you report your spouse if they stole a large amount of cash? Or murdered someone? In self-defence?

1) As previously mentioned, wrong.

2) If I lived in the wilderness, or in an era or civilization based on hunting and gathering, then absolutely. If my plane went down and I was stuck in the middle of nowhere, I'd be setting up traps and skinning animals, sure. But all with a tear in my eye.

3) I truly do think it's age dependent. You have a bunch of fifty year old men playing russian roulette for money and the guns are registered etc., etc., i think you'd have a hard time convincing a jury that the guys who are still alive are to be held responsible for the losers death. Now put a group of fifteen year olds in their place and I'd definitely be putting them through the wringer.

4) I would never watch a public execution. I barely look at accidents when I drive by. I hate that the human brain is drawn to suffering and destruction. Like the guys who watch people get shot on youtube.

5) My first reaction was no, I wouldn't turn them in unless I felt they would harm someone again. But really, if I had been married to a Paul Bernardo or a John Wayne Gacy, yeah, I'm reporting him. But D.B. Cooper, the airborne extorter, him I'd let get away, then write a story about him.

1) Wrong.
2) Vegetarian
3)Depends on the justice system. Generally speaking suicide is a crime so yes they should be.
4) I would if it was someone I know, so that I could be there for them, same goes for televised.
5) Not if they stole cash -I would probably reassess our marraige though. No, I wouldn't report my spouse if he murdered someone in self-defence, however I would encourage him to go to the police. I
wonder why I married him in the first place.

1) Right, or so all my neighbors with guns keep telling me...

2) Hell yeah! Steak baby!

3) Come on, how long can you possibly "win" at this game? And the loser basically committed suicide...

4) Depends who they were frying! A few Taliban leaders and sociopaths come to mind quickly...

5) If she bought me something nice...

1) So wrong.
2) I already am a vegetarian. 8 years and counting.
3) Hahahaha...Russian Roulette is ridiculous. I suppose technically any and all deaths would be considered suicide, so the winners wouldn't be punished. The losers, if they somehow didn't die, would be. That sucks.
4) I don't think I could watch someone be killed. Even in movies I look away during scenes like that. If it was someone convicted of a really heinous crime, like a serial baby killer (hey, it could happen!) I might be convinced to attend. And cover my eyes.
5) Do I get a percentage of the cash?
If my spouse killed someone, even in self-defense, I'd be dragging them to couple's therapy and then to the courthouse to get divorced, most likely. Anyone capable of murder is not someone I want to share a bed with. I probably wouldn't report them though.

While I myself have not yet chosen to hunt, I do not oppose the legislation that allows others to do so. I believe that hunting can be done responsibly and that it's a part of Canadian culture.

2) If you had to kill your own food to live, would you do it? Or become a vegetarian?

Whichever was tastier/I had time for.

I really don't think anyone 'wins' there. I also don't think this happens very often. I wonder if it's worth the brain power to decide either way. Okay, I guess the winners should be prosecuted for any laws that they break in the process of 'playing'. Like being an accomplice to discharging a weapon within city limits or whatever.

4) Would you attend a public execution? What if it was televised, would you watch?

No, never. I do not believe in capital punishment under any circumstances. And I mean any, so don't even bother saying "but what about so-and-so?".

5) Would you report your spouse if they stole a large amount of cash? Depends on who from and the chances of being caught. It might be difficult to live with the guilt/stress involved.

Or murdered someone? Maybe.

In self-defense? Definitely. Why live on the lamb when she did nothing wrong?
